I’ve been quite fascinated by the word “vanity” lately.
If you Google the word you’ll get this definition: “Excessive pride in or admiration of one's own appearance or achievements.”
Vanity derives from the Latin word vanus — which means empty.
In Greek vanity translates to ματαιοδοξία, which means praising pointless—or empty— things. I find this to be extremely on point when it comes to social media.
We’re all addicted to apps that provide—to 99.9% of us— zero value to our lives, instead, they make us feel more stressed, worried, and upset, and it’s all for what?
So we can flex our experiences and our possessions to people we don’t even like? When was the last time you were genuinely happy to see someone’s story and post?
How many people do you think that follow you on social media get excited when you post something?
Besides your family and closest friends, it's possible that no one else truly cares about you.
And you end up spending countless hours on your phone day, and night, with your life slowly passing you by. Is this why we’re here?
Is this the point of your life? To look back on it when you’re older and realize you wasted every single moment trying to satisfy the needs of other people by wasting your time in front of a screen?
Is this the point of meaninglessness?
If reading these words doesn’t make you upset, scroll back up, and start reading the whole story again.
