There was a man who arguably changed the course of history.
This man started working at a company named Edison Illuminating Company in 1891. Within two years, this man would become chief engineer.
He had a job that allowed him to work on side projects and hence he became interested in car engines after seeing one in Detroit.
This made him feel fascinated by the Duryea brothers' attempt to build a gasoline-powered engine in the early 1896s, so, he decided to recreate this engine design from his perspective.
In his first attempt, he created the Quadricycle, which was two bicycles attached in a parallel fashion that moved with the help of a gasoline-powered engine.
It took the man three years to find an investor to support his inventions. In 1899, with the help of his first investor, he founded the Detroit Motor Company.
Unfortunately, because this man couldn’t sell these creations of his, his investors lost their interest in funding this little hobby and decided to shut down this company.
But that didn’t stop this man from pursuing his passion. He decided to build a sports car, which he would use two years later to successfully participate in a car race.
This was all he needed to attract the interest of other investors and create a new company in November of 1901 which would be called Henry Ford Company.
As you can imagine, this man was Henry Ford.
Within a few months, Henry Ford would quit his job, and his former associates and investors would establish Cadillac Automobile Company.
Because Ford was annoyed, he decided to build a new company with Alexander Malcomson, a coal dealer, in which he’d build the cars he always dreamt of.
To his bad luck, that didn’t go exactly as planned and he ended up owing a large amount of money— 160k USD— to a company named Dodge Brothers. His luck quickly turned around once they decided to forget about his debt, and asked for equity from his company. He happily accepted the offer.
In 1903 he renamed his company Ford Automobile Company, and in the same year— after five years of nonstop failures— he sold his first car ever to a dentist from Chicago.
For the next five years, Ford kept selling a few cars, but he didn’t see a lot of success until 1908 when he found a lot of success with his first-ever mass-production car, the Model T.
It took him another five years to fix some production issues, and the year after that, his sales skyrocketed to over 250.000 per year.
By the year 1918, Ford was one of the most known and used cars in the U.S.
It took Henry Ford more than two decades to succeed and make his dreams come true.
This story is one of the most beautiful stories in human history because it shows a lot of what perseverance and discipline can do to one’s life.
